If you see something and you know it’s a task that you could finish in a just a minute or two, instead of putting it off, just do it right then and then you don’t have to carry that mental burden of trying to remember that it needs to be done. And it will actually get done. You won’t stumble across it weeks later and kick yourself for failing to even start the task.
How long ago did Konmari start talking about “does this spark joy”? It’s hard to get rid of things. It’s hard to stop lying to yourself and get rid of something that you keep telling yourself you’re going to use again some day. I was doing some cleaning up this week and found stuff that I’ve been meaning to get back to for 10 years. Well, I finally let some things go and the apartment is starting to feel more like a home and less like a storage shed.
I was able to free up space and get furniture that we need but have been putting off getting because there was no space for it. It’s amazing what a couch can do for adding comfort and value to your apartment.
If we’re going to live here, it should be a place of comfort and refuge. It’s hard to feel comforted when you’re surrounded by reminders of things that you never managed to start or finish.
It’s a real task though. I’ve been working on trimming down on stuff and things for years. Sometimes the trimming is more aggressive, when I have time, and sometimes it’s just an item here or there that I can drop in the waste bin or recycling.
The process continues.
