It’s a big ugly bastard of a fish, with it’s big head being the biggest part. If I laid my hand across it, from the bottom of the head to the top, my fingers wouldn’t get past the eye. I was kind of shocked when I saw it laying there, not so much just because of its size, but because of how disproportionate it is.
Despite it’s odd appearance, it made a might fine soup.
it sells cheaper, for 20-35 pesos per kilo or so, you can buy a head, and tell your wife to half cook it by frying, then sinigang sa misu.

Weird you should mention that. I'm reading a book called Winter's Heart, book 9 of the Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan, and one of the characters eats a tasty 'gilded fish' and stripped it clean of everything except the eyes, though he was told that they're the best part.

I know this sounds gross, but according to my mom the best part is the eyes. I haven't tried it and I don't think I will. Ever.

Honestly, eating a fish's head is something that never occurred to me until I lived in Singapore and saw curry fish head on the menu. I actually thought that there was nothing edible in a fish's head, though now I've met people that swear cold monkey brains are delicious…. so why not? I might give it a try sometime.

There's an eatery in Quezon City that only serves Fish Head Soup (Sinigang, Sinigang sa Miso, etc.). Since I'm not really into fish, I haven't tried it. But a lot of my relatives love fish head in sinigang sa miso, especially if it's made with pink salmon head.

I don't remember how much we paid for the maya maya. I mentioned the mamale to my wife and she said she's never seen it herself. I don't know that I'd want a fish head though.
