Wal Mart Pricing. Win or Fail?

320 GB and 500 GB Seagate external portable hard drives for sale at Wal Mart.

I was looking through the electronics section at Wal Mart and noticed the prices on the 320 gb and 500 gb Seagate external hard drives are a little weird:

320 GB Seagate hard drives are 79 dollars.

500 gb external Seagate hard drives are 79 dollars.

Maybe one price is wrong, or maybe they’re really charging the same amount for both hard drives.  Who knows?  Regardless, I know I’d rather get a 500 GB hard drive if I’m going to pay the same amount for a smaller one.  The only difference I could see is that the 320 GB version had more variety in colors.

These seemed to be advertised as being good for saving video, photos and music on, for streaming to televisions or computers. The 3 external HDDs I have now are used as backups though. They're rarely plugged in. Well, I do have one plugged into my XBOX 360 right now because I was watching a movie from it, through the XBOX and on the TV.

The 500s being an older model is all I can think of, but I checked the packaging and they seemed to have the same features. Shoot. Makes me wish I had more money to spend. One of the HDDs we have could use replacing. I'd prefer to find a 1 TB drive though.

What? Like the 500s will go on sale for less than the 320s? Maybe they're old models?

Maybe, but in the US, if the tag says 79 and you get to the counter and it says something else, they have to give it to you for the advertised price or they can get into legal trouble. Win for the consumer!

if it is indeed a taggers error. the barcode will tell its real price when you hit the checkout counter.

Another way of thinking about it is that perhaps, those 500's will be sold at $59. Next week.
